The booklet is intended to help us reflect on our call to be kings in Christ by looking at King David's example. Through Baptism, we are all called to be priests, prophets, and kings, sharing in Christ's divine roles. In the biblical sense, a good king rightly orders his community to God's purposes. The booklet includes excerpts from Bishop Barron's book, 2 Samuel: Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible, which also serves as the foundation for the David the King video series.
Adam was the first king and steward of Eden's well-kept garden. He was called to govern the garden in accordance with God's mind and purpose, but he failed to do so by allowing negative influences to wreak havoc on Eden. Long after Adam, David emerged as the undisputed king who would restore order in the Garden and bring the entire world under God's control. But, like Adam, David sinned, and his reign heralded a string of compromised kings and rejected prophets. The Scriptures, on the other hand, predicted a son of David who would realize the fullness of Israelite kingship... but whose actual reign defied expectation.
